About us

MCTS is a cross-faculty integrative research center focusing on the interface between technology and society. Our research is empirical, interdisciplinary, and reflexive. This involves a dialogue between philosophers, social scientists, architects, engineers and natural scientists in an attempt to explore a mutual understanding and collaboration.

One key area of our research focuses on how science and technology shape urbanization and city life, paying particular attention to current infrastructural transitions, urban and architectural design practices, as well as new forms of public-expert collaboration. Some topics of interest for our research include: smart & green urbanism; building materials and technologies; urban natures, disasters and pollution; urban control centers and algorithmic urbanism; planning and design as epistemic practices; the assemblage of real-estate and housing markets; urban controversies, citizen activism and experimental collaboration; etc. This area of research is led by Ignacio Farías, assistant professor at MCTS in joint appointment with the Faculty of Architecture.
